House Tour: Guest Room and More

It’s Friday, and that means it’s the final day of my home tour! Today I’m featuring the upstairs hallway/landing and the guest room. I hope you’ve enjoyed getting a glimpse inside my home. Thanks so much for checking it out, and a special thanks again to my friend Laura for taking the wonderful photos!

House Tour: The Rest of Downstairs

This may sound weird, but I think my favorite space in my house is the downstairs hallway/entryway. A lot of my favorite items are here, and I think this space represents my style better than any other room. Colorful, eclectic, modern, filled with art, and a touch of mid-century and Chinoiserie style.

I also really love the downstairs powder room. It has great little built-in shelves that are the perfect spot to display my collection of French and Italian knick-knacks. About half of them are souvenirs from my trips abroad and the other half are gift from my mom.

I’m a Real Bed!

When I last showed you guys picture of my bedroom it was looking great but a bit incomplete.  Specifically, the bed was lacking a headboard.  But I finally fixed that!

IMG_2184

I found a great upholstered headboard on Joss & Main during their Cyber Monday sale.  The headboard from Skyline was already a good price, but on Cyber Monday they offered an additional 30% off everything.  So that made this king sized headboard only $225 plus $9.95 shipping.  I had been looking online for awhile but this was by far the best price I had seen.

Now I know I probably could have made my own upholstered headboard for a little less money, but I’m pretty sure it would have came out looking like a DIY project.  This professionally made headboard didn’t cost substantially more than all the supplies for a DIY headboard would have, and it was a whole heck of a lot easier Smile

I love the texture of the fabric and I really love the brass nailhead trim.  It’s so pretty!  And now it’s really comfy to sit in bed and read.  Good thing my wonderful hubby got me some great books for Christmas!

Love them (and him Winking smile).  And Young House Love is even autographed!!

He also got me a cute kate spade iphone case!

What a great guy!

Today I’m going to get some last minute Christmas things done so that we can hit the road tomorrow!  We’re driving back to Illinois and staying until the day after Christmas.  I can’t wait!

Ohhhh the Weather Outside is Frightful

Actually it’s fairly nice outside, but since this is a Christmas post I thought it was appropriate to title it with lyrics from a Christmas song.  One of my former co-workers would burst out in song singing “Let it Snow” about 5 times a day during the winter, and probably about twice a day throughout the year.  Now I’m feeling nostalgic and I miss her terrible singing; it always made me smile.

Anyway, I digress.  I’ve gotten about 85% of the Christmas decorating done inside and I want to share some photos with you guys!

First up, the all important Christmas tree!  This is the first year we’ve bought a real tree since the apartments didn’t allow it.  I was a little resistant but I have to admit this one looks pretty great and it smells incredible!

IMG_2044

Leo destroyed our old tree skirt a couple years ago so we bought a new one at Hobby Lobby on sale for $25.  I really like it, but do you think it might be a little small for the tree?

IMG_2047

I decorated our little fake tree from last year and put it on the table in front of the living room window.  Ben and I have a tradition of buying an ornament for each other every year for Christmas so I decorated this tree with our special ornaments.  I don’t have a tree skirt for this one but I did dress it up a little bit by putting it on a snowflake placemat from Pier 1.

IMG_2038

This is also the first year we’ve had a mantle so we had to get some stockings!  From left to right there’s one for Ben, me, Finnley, and Leo.  And that little ball thing in the middle?

IMG_2068

It’s a really pretty light ball I bought on clearance from Pottery Barn.  It looks great lit up on the mantle but unfortunately I couldn’t get a good picture of it.

IMG_2064

I put a pretty gold mosaic glass bowl on the TV stand and filled it with some cheap filler ornaments from Target.

IMG_2072

I wanted an ornament stand because I thought I had so many ornaments, but it turns out I had always just had a small tree.  Since I didn’t have any ornaments left after decorating my big new tree I had to pick up some cheap little ornaments.  Oh, and the ornament stand is actually a jewelry stand from Pier 1 since it was $10 cheaper than their actual Christmas ornament stands.  I have it sitting on my nesting tables in the upstairs hallway with some cute leftover gift boxes from last year.

IMG_2079

And I can’t leave without showing you pictures of the outside of our house.  I know it doesn’t look like much in this photo but since this is our first house Ben was super excited to hang some Christmas lights.  I picked out the little candy cane lights, aren’t they cute?!

IMG_2035

I still want to hang some garland lights on the mantle, around the front door, and on the stairs handrail but I really like what we have done so far!

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend!  I will be spending my weekend working on my big Interior Design project, wish me luck!

New in the Bedroom

I’ve bought some new things for our master bedroom recently and I think they make a huge difference in the look and feel of the room.

IMG_2001

The first change is the comforter.  Here’s how the bed looked before:

And now:

IMG_1994

It still needs a headboard, which will probably be a DIY project, but I really like the new bedding.  I bought the new comforter set, which included the comforter, shams, and two decorative pillows, for…wait for it…$60 at HomeGoods!  That is an amazing price for a comforter, let alone a five-piece set.  The new bedding is soft and warm and cushy, which we really needed for this time of year.

I also added a new sunburst mirror above the chair.

IMG_1995

Doesn’t it look great!  I love the scale of it and the impact it makes in the space.  It was only $60 at Pier 1, which is an awesome price for a piece this large.

I also added a few more accessories and some artwork above the dressers.

The room keeps getting better, slowly but surely.

New chairs

I’ve been waiting a long time to reveal my new chairs.  I bought these two vintage chairs from a little antique store in my hometown about a year and a half ago.  The problem was that I had no way to get them back to Kansas City.  They didn’t fit in my parents’ car either so they couldn’t bring them when they visited.  When they came here last month though I finally convinced them to drive the Jeep which has a lot more room.  Now I finally have my pretty chairs!

They’re currently living in the formal dining room, which right now is serving as a mostly empty pass through room between the living room and the kitchen/eating area.

To fill up the room a little bit more I also added a small shelf to use as a bookshelf and as a small bar.  I put a tray I already owned on the top shelf and filled it with a few pretty glasses, some of my prettier and more interesting bottles of liquor, and a couple souvenir shot glasses from Paris and Rome.  The middle rack has some books and the bottom rack holds my home magazines.

And here’s how everything looks together.

What do you think of my colorful vintage chairs?

My Room for Color

I just finished submitting my entry for Apartment Therapy’s “Room for Color” contest.  Hopefully they’ll select my entry and post it on AT in the next couple days, but in the event that they don’t, here are some pictures of my beautiful blue living room.  And if I do get selected, well then you are just getting an early preview!
