Ikea Press Preview

File this under yet another “Perk of Being a Blogger:” last Wednesday I got to be part of an official Press Preview of the brand new Kansas City Ikea! The store doesn’t open until September 10 but I got to join press and bloggers from throughout the city for a special preview event a week before the opening. How cool is that?!

We were treated to a buffet lunch of Ikea’s signature Swedish food items (smoked salmon, pickled herring, deviled eggs, and of course, meatballs) plus sparkling cider and lots of pretty desserts.

Ikea Food

The store manager and the marketing director addressed the group and told us about the upcoming promotions for the Grand Opening. Here’s the scoop on the giveaways:

September 10: The first 40 adults in line will get a free sofa; the next 100 adults will get an armchair; the first 100 children will get a stuffed toy; the first 2500 customers from 9/10-9/14 will get an envelope with a surprise gift of a gift card between $10-$250 or a BOGO food voucher; and if your birthday is September 10 you get a free $40 gift card!

September 12: The first 40 adults will win free meatballs for a year.

September 10-September 14: All customers can enter a drawing for a $1000 gift card.

After the speeches we were split into small groups and escorted on a tour of the store. If you’ve never been to an Ikea before, let me tell you: this store is massive! The whole building is 359,000 square feet, and the warehouse takes up 2/3 of the building, so the shopping area is over 100,000 square feet. I’ll tell you now that if you go, you’ll want to make a day of it. Good thing they have a restaurant there so you won’t starve during your 3+ hour shopping trip (3 hours is apparently the length of an average shopping trip at Ikea).

You’ll start your shopping journey upstairs, which is where all the big stuff is (furniture, kitchen cabinets, closet systems, etc). They have just about anything you could ever need in a variety of styles, from traditional to ultra-modern and everything in between. They also have 37 fully outfitted rooms and 3 complete model homes, with the largest clocking in at almost 600 square feet. Small for an actual home, but huge for a display inside a store.

They have a great kids section with tons of furniture for every age from baby to teenager and lots of colorful toys and accessories.

The downstairs is where you can pick up all your accessories, from dishes to duvets to picture frames and lighting.

Something else to note if you’re an Ikea novice like I was is that while you shop for your furniture you’ll keep a list of what you’re going to buy, and then take that list to the warehouse to pull your own items. If you don’t want to spend your time wandering through an enormous warehouse you can pay them to pull the items for you and then deliver everything to you no later than the next day. If I was buying more than a couple small things I would definitely choose this option.

Another interesting feature at Ikea is the free supervised play area. If you have kids and you don’t think they would enjoy shopping with you for hours, you can drop them off at there for an hour while you shop in peace. The kids just have to be between the posted heights and they have to be potty trained.

On the way out of the store you might stop by the food market to pick up some yummy Swedish food to take home with you. Although not exactly Swedish, I recommend the cinnamon rolls (a package of which was given to us as a gift for attending the preview).

And so concludes my virtual Ikea tour. The Kansas City Ikea opens this Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., will any of you be there for the big festivities? If you go this week let me know what you think, hopefully it won’t be too insane.

P.S. come back tomorrow to see what’s on my Ikea wish list!

Go Blog Social Meetup at Kate Spade

kate spade storefront

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending a fun blogger meetup at the Kate Spade store at the Country Club Plaza. If you surveyed women in their 20’s and 30’s, especially creative and/or fashionable women, I bet 95% of them would say they love Kate Spade, so it was only natural that Go Blog Social would team up with them to host an event for bloggers and other small business owners.

I’m with the 95% that loves Kate Spade, and even though a lot of their items are out of my price range right now I love visiting their stores. They do such an amazing job decorating and styling!

They had cute drinks and snacks, a couple giveaways, and a 20% shopping discount for the night. I think everyone’s favorite part was just getting to catch up with blogger friends and meeting new ones!

I borrowed the above photo from Kari from This, Too. Pictured from left to right are Alexandra Sprerrazza, Kari, Meg from Life of Meg, and me! It was so great to visit with these ladies!

I was on a budget but I couldn’t leave the store empty-handed, so I bought this darling pencil pouch that I plan to use as a clutch. It was $30 but with the Go Blog Social discount I only paid $24.

I mentioned earlier that they did a couple giveaways and guess what? I was one of the winners! I won a ticket to the Go Blog Social pop-up in Chicago! I had such a wonderful time at GBS in KC this April so I am thrilled to learn more and meet more awesome people in Chicago. Are any of my fellow blogger readers planning to go?

Anthropologie Birthday Party

Hi everyone! I’m working on a big post with lots of pictures of my house’s landscaping makeover that I’m so excited to show you, but since it’s not quite ready yet I thought I’d share some pictures of a great event I went to last night. My local Anthropologie sent me an email a few weeks ago inviting me to a birthday party they were throwing for me, so I had to say yes! Ok, the party wasn’t just for me, it was for all their members who had May birthdays, but it still felt pretty special!

They had a section of the store dedicated to the party with the cutest table setup ever. It was decorated with giant pink balloons, confetti, pretty flowers, and a gold garland. The table was also decked out with yummy treats that included champagne cocktails, macarons, and birthday cake! Like all Anthropologie store displays, it was perfect.

Anthro Birthday EventAnthro event treats

For my birthday Anthro also sent me a 15% off coupon which I got to share with my friend Jenna who came to the event with me. We had a lot of fun drinking our champagne and browsing the store. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money but of course I couldn’t come home empty handed, so I bought this fab gold and glass lantern, this monogram mug with an “E”, and a sweet mini bottle of rose-scented perfume that was on sale for $5. My grand total was only $41! Pretty impressive for an Anthropologie shopping trip if I do say so myself.Anthro gifts

If you live near an Anthropologie I’d highly recommend becoming a member so you get invited to great events like this! It’s free to sign up online or in store.

Have a wonderful weekend!

HomeGoods Blogger Event Recap

This Saturday was a busy, busy day for me. I got up early so I could attend a private shopping event at HomeGoods that started at 8:00 a.m. That’s much earlier than I like to be up and about on the weekend but it was totally worth it. Angela from Handmade in the Heartland worked with the HomeGoods on Ward Parkway in Kansas City to put together an awesome shopping event for her friends and followers. Everybody got a $10 gift card just for attending, and we had opportunities to win extra shopping money by playing “The Price is Right” and by instagramming photos of a favorite item in the store. This photo won me another $20!

Of course I took advantage of the private shopping time before the store opened to browse the store and pick up some new goodies. Look at all the fun stuff I spotted there!

I wanted to buy just about everything I saw but I limited myself to only one cart’s worth of new treasures Winking smile. I bought a set of nice new plastic water glasses and some birthday gifts for my sister in law: a pretty picture frame, a scented candles, and a box of French chocolate cookies.

I also bought a new pet bed and some new throw pillows:

In addition to the gift cards, Angela also gave everyone a nice handmade present. How cute is this sign?!

I’m so glad I went to the HomeGoods event, not only because of the shopping and free gifts, but also because I got to see a bunch of my new blogging buddies I met at Go Blog Social! It was great to see these girls again!

The rest of the day was spent downtown at DIFFA KC’s Conversations on Dining and Dining by Design. Come back later this week for my recap of these amazing events!
